Strengthen Your Medical Coding Certification Exam Preparation -Avontix

Anyone who is in the field of medical coding aspires to gain at least a couple of certifications that show his or her expertise. After a couple of years in the medical coding jobs, one can understand the nuances that have to be mastered to continue in the field along with the certifications that add value to their experience. Like any exam, the medical coding certifications also require proper preparation to be able to clear them. Though you may feel that you are already experienced in the field and have been dealing with these things for years, there will be still room for preparation. Here are few tips to help you clear your certification exams:

  • Get hold of the right book: If you are attempting the AAPC credentials, then you have to follow the American Medical Association’s CPT version. It is even better if you can get the American Medical Association’s Professional Edition of CPT for its color and pictures.
  • Bookmark: Forget the strategy you followed in the early years of education and adopt the method of marking in the book itself. Do not waste your valuable time in noting down things which you already know. Make a note of only those things that are very important to you and any codes that can be related to or directed to another code.
  • Strengthen your weak areas: As discussed earlier, do not waste time on things you have mastered in the medical coding jobs. Instead, try to identify the areas where you need to put extra effort and make notes related to those areas. Make your own strategies and methods to remember easily what you have learnt and made notes for.
  • Take a crash course: If you find yourself a bit uncomfortable with any areas of the exam, then try to locate if there is any crash course available for the exam. If it is difficult to identify or attend such a course, then you may also try seeking help from your colleagues who have cleared this exam before or are appearing along with you. Knowledge sharing really works wonders.
  • Go for exam prep book: Though it is a little expensive to get an exam prep book from AAPC, it will really help you in understanding the exam pattern and kind of questions that may come up. It has practice questions that give you enough practice before you finally attempt the exam.
